Brubaker & Phillips
Fans of Brubaker and Phillips know their kind of story and the style very well. On the off chance that someone hasn't read Criminal, Incognito or Sleeper I will try to explain how this all works and the nuisances for this particular issue. The bottom line is that Brubaker and Phillips tell dark stories that are about shady characters where the story takes their lives from one twist to the next and the true "plot" doesn't really become clear until the very end. The comics are done very well and each series has it's own twist on it and this one creeps into the horror genre that has ties to HP Lovecraft. This is an excellent first issue.

Media Release -- Join us Thursday January 12th at the Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art - MoCCA - as Chip Kidd pulls back the curtain on Bat-Manga!, the 1966 Bat-mania phenomenon that first took Japan by storm. A weekly Japanese manga anthology for boys, Shonen King, licensed the rights to commission its own Batman and Robin stories. A year later, the stories stopped. They were never collected in Japan, and never translated into English until the debut of Chip Kidd's Bat-Manga! in 2008.

Uncanny X-Force #19.1
Marvel Comics
Remender, Tan & Villarrubia
The latest issue of Uncanny X-Force is by far the weakest of the Remender run as it focuses completely on the characters that occupy the alternate dimension known as the Age of Apocalypse. This isn't because the book really isn't about Uncanny X-Force or that it's some sort of massive recap of the series in an effort to create a jump-on point as the whole ".1" initiative hopes to provide. Instead the book is weak because without the full context of the alternate dimension and how these characters weave into the regular dimension, the story simply makes these characters feel thin and utterly disposable. This book should have been a zero issue to the upcoming series, Age of Apocalypse, or it should have been a back-up with the regular series featured upfront. I found this issue to be badly misplaced as it crushed the momentum this outstanding series had going for it up until this issue, while also damaging any interest I had for the Age of Apocalypse series.

Swamp Thing #5
DC Comics
Snyder & Paquette
Sometimes all it takes is some good, old-fashioned action to get a comic book clicking and that is exactly what this issue provides. Snyder has been building up a few threads that mesh together in this issue, but for me, the action is what makes the book enjoyable. The unfortunate aspect of the book is that the story that Snyder is building issue after issue will make it more and more difficult for a new reader to jump in. This could be a missed opportunity because of all of the positive buzz this book has month in and month out. If only DC would utilize the recap page. This is a terrific read.
