Super Hero Squad: The Best of Season 1
by on Jan.24, 2012, under Extra
With the premiere of "The Super Hero Squad Show" on The Hub Monday, January 30th at 4 p.m. ET, series Supervising Producer and VP of Animation Development and Production Cort Lane sat down with Marvel.com to share his top five episodes of Season 1!
#1) Episode 104 – "To Err is Superhuman"
"This is one of my favorite episodes, because it’s the first appearance of Reptil, a character I was honored to co-create with Humberto Ramos and Joe Quesada," recounts Lane. "Getting to work on the creation of a Marvel hero has been a dream of mine since the age of 10. The animation on this episode was exactly where I wanted it to be, and that made me love it all the more."
#2) Episode 110 – "This Forest Green"
"This is one of the funniest episodes of Season 1," says Lane. "When else do Marvel heroes get to go on an adventure inside Hulk’s nose? And the title is just brilliant."
#3) Episode 115 – "Mental Organism Designed Only for Kisses!"
"This one has a magically-induced romance between M.O.D.O.K. and Ms. Marvel," Lane explains. "I knew it would be phenomenal when we started to break the script. The voice actors who play M.O.D.O.K. (Tom Kenny) and Ms. Marvel (Grey DeLisle) are the best in the business and good friends, so they are amazing at playing off of each other in the booth. This is a case of writing an episode to suit your amazing talent, and we even encouraged them to improvise some of their performance. Together, M.O.D.O.K. and Ms. Marvel are hilarious!"
#4) Episode 120 – "Election of Evil!"
"Stan Lee asked for an episode that prominently featured his character, the Mayor of Super Hero City," remembers Lane. "By this point in production, we realized he is an amazing voice actor and such a ham, so we thought it was an awesome idea. And I am always a little star-struck (still!) by Stan, so the recording session was a thrill."
#5) Episode 125 – "Last Exit Before Doomsday"
"This episode was epic since it featured the introduction of Galactus," Lane elaborates. "We needed a celebrity with a deep voice who had sci-fi credentials, and George Takei ("Star Trek") was the first person who came to mind. And he said yes! We were shocked and very excited that we actually got him. He flew in from New York for the part and was so much fun in the booth that we brought him back in for Season 2. And I am a huge fan of Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Suburgatory"), so it was great having her play the part of Stardust for the episode."
