How to Buy Casual Shoes For Men
Yes, there’s quite a variety of men’s casual shoes available. That’s because this shoe category is sort of a catch-all for all other shoes that don’t quite fit into this category, so we basically had to redefine this category. And how we defined this category was by putting shoes into it that are known for being comfortable, easy to slip on and off, and having a little bit of style, too. Defining this category in this way leaves out slippers and flip-flops, but it leaves in a variety of other shoes including penny loafers, desert boots, chukkas, Derby shoes, Oxford shoes, and various slip-on models.
Now that we’ve adequately defined this category, we can work towards our goal of helping men select a shoe which is not only comfortable but which also serves their needs. After all, men are not a monolith—each man has his own needs and desires when it comes to their life and their footwear. Which is why we’ve created this guide in the first place. Our goal is not to tell men what they should buy, but to help them buy a shoe that fits their lifestyle. With that in mind, let’s get started and find a casual shoe for men that fits their style and their comfort needs.
Step One: Determine a Style
Although it’s probably beyond the capacity of this guide to talk about the intricacies of all of the available casual shoe types, we can discuss some of the more basic models and determine their suitable function and/or style. Below is an example of just some of the casual shoes available.
Derby Shoes-Derby shoes have a dress shoe feel to them and can often be passed off as a dress shoe. However, unlike most dress shoes, they are a lot more comfortable and are just as easy to pair with a pair of khakis and a casual shirt as they are with a suit. These type of shoes look a lot like Oxford shoes, but they have a lacing system that’s open.
Oxford Shoes-Yes, we know that these shoes are basically a dress shoe, as determine by just about any definition. Although it does serve that purpose quite well and is often the shoe seen on young men going to prep school, they also have become a popular casual shoe. These shoes are easily recognizable by their closed lacing system. These shoes are comfortable but have a polished look that allows them to be worn during more formal occasions.
Slip-On Loafers-This shoe is probably what most people think about when they think about casual men’s shoes. Style-wise, they’re about halfway between a dress shoe and a tennis shoe, but they don’t have laces that have to be tied. All you have to do is slip them on and go about your day. And this also makes them not only comfortable but easy to wear.
Sneakers-Sneakers have been a type of casual shoes that’s been in men’s wardrobes for decades now, and there’s a good reason why this is the case. That’s because these shoes are not only comfortable, but they allow the man to be physically active as well. Men can run, walk and play sports in these shoes quite comfortably and easily, which is probably why most men have several pairs of them in their closet.
Step Two: Choose The Correct Size
If you know your shoe size, then you can skip this step. If you don’t, however, be sure to get an accurate measurement of your foot. You can easily do this at home by tracing your foot on a piece of paper, draw lines that touch each side (front, back, right and left), and then measure these lines. Measure the length from the front to back and from side to side. Next, round to the nearest 1/16th-inch. The length of the measurements measures your shoe size, and the width of your measurement measures your shoes’ width. Below is a sample chart (all sizes are in U.S shoe sizes).
Shoe Size According to Length
Size 8: 10-inch length
Size 9: 10.31-inch length
Size 9.5: 10.5-inch length
Size 10: 10.69-inch length
Size 13: 11.69-inch length
Size 14: 12-inch length
Shoe Size According to Width
To figure out the accurate width for your shoes, you are going to have to start with the length of your foot and then determine the width to come up with the accurate size. Below is a sample chart for your convenience.
Size 10 Shoe
3.8-inch width=C Width (Narrow)
4.0-inch width=D Width (Standard)
4.2-inch width=E Width (Wide)
For example, if the man’s foot is 10.69-inches long and it has a 4-inch width, then the man wears a size 10D shoe. If the man’s foot width is 4.2-inches, however, then he wears a 10E or 10 wide shoes. And that’s all there is to it to find a comfortable men’s casual shoe that fits and looks good.
