How To Choose A Mountain Bike

Once you’ve decided to get a new mountain bike or upgrade an old one you have a few choices to make. Although these bikes are relatively simple, as is the process of buying one, there are still going to be a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to make sure that you’re getting what you want. To help you along, we’ve detailed some of these points below.

Choose The Bike’s Style

When it comes to mountain biking, there are about five different styles of bikes to choose from. There are trail bikes, cross-country bikes, fat bikes, downhill or park bikes, and all-mountain bikes. Of course, which one you choose is going to be based upon how you intend on using the bike.

  • Trail Bikes: This type of mountain bike is one of the most popular ones available and that’s probably because it doesn’t have a definite role assigned to it. It’s a good bike for running trails and has the equipment necessary to handle a decent combination of hills and descents. They are designed to be fun and easy to ride. Specs: 120mm to 140mm suspension travel and a 67-degree to 69-degree head-tube angle.
  • Cross-Country Bikes: These bikes are designed to handle climbs well and to be pretty quick. They tend to be extremely efficient and don’t weight a whole lot. Specs: 80mm to 100mm suspension travel and 70-degree head tube angle.
  • Fat Bikes: Just about everyone can recognize fat bikes just on an initial glance. That’s because they have large tires, sometimes as wide as 5-inches or wider. These wide tires make the bikes look funny, but it gives them the traction they need to handle muddy, sandy or snowy terrain.
  • Park Bikes: These bikes, also known as Downhill Bikes, are large and designed for harsh terrain. Specs: 170+mm suspension travel 65-degree head tube angle.
  • All-Mountain Bikes: Some riders refer to these bike as true mountain bikes. They are designed to handle large climbs and steep descents. Specs 140mm to 170mm suspension travel and a 68-degree head tube angle.

Choose The Bike’s Suspension

Mountain bikes come with three different types of suspension. These suspension types are Rigid, Hardtail and Full Suspension. Let’s take a closer look at each of these suspension types and examine their main characteristics.

  • Rigid: Although we’ve listed this as a suspension type, in reality, rigid bikes are ones that don’t feature a suspension. They usually don’t cost as much as bikes with suspension, but they’re not very comfortable. Fat bikes tend to be rigid because their large tires tend to act like suspension and absorb shocks and bumps.
  • Hardtail: With hardtail bikes, all of the suspension is on the front wheel. These bikes tend to be less expensive than bikes with full-suspension. The types of bikes which usually have a hardtail suspension include most cross-country bikes and some all-mountain bikes.
  • Full Suspension: Bikes with full-suspension are more expensive than comparable bikes, but they’re better at absorbing shocks and bumps on the trail. As a result, the ride tends to be smoother and more enjoyable.

Choose The Wheel Size

Something that really affects the performance of a bike is its wheel size. Below are a couple of things to keep in mind as you choose your mountain bike’s wheel size.

  • 24-Inch Wheels: Most children’s mountain bikes have 24-inch wheels so that the child’s legs can reach the pedals. This is a good size for children older than 10-years old, but if the child is younger than 20-inch wheels are probably going to have to be equipped in order for the child to ride.
  • 26-Inch Wheels: These wheels are the original mountain bike wheel size. It’s designed to handle rough terrain well.
  • 27.5-Inch Wheels: These wheels are designed to roll easily and to be extremely maneuverable.
  • 29-Inch Wheels: These wheels are “slower” than either 26-inch or 27.5-inch wheels. This means they accelerate slowly. However, they tend to be better at handling rough terrain than other tires.

Choose Mountain Bike Material

The last thing to think about is the bike’s composition. There are a lot of different materials to choose from including Carbon Fiber, Aluminum, Titanium, Chrome Molybdenum, and Carbon Steel. Although going into the various bike materials is beyond the scope of this article, it’s something to keep in mind when shopping for your next mountain bike. If there’s one thing to remember, however, is that aluminum is generally the lighter and cheaper material and carbon fiber tends to be stronger and more expensive.
