The Ultimate Rat Trap Guide

When rats invade your home it can make you feel vulnerable. Not only do you have to worry about the rats spreading disease by urinating and defecating all over your home, but you have to worry about them getting into your food, too. Rats can spread a variety of pathogens and parasites around your home, so it’s very important to get rid of them as quickly as humanly possible. Unfortunately, this is the stage of the process where a lot of people get stuck. They know they have to eliminate the problem, but they just aren’t sure how to do it.

Although some people turn to rat poisons to kill off these vermin, that’s not always a viable option for a lot of people. And there’s a variety of reasons why this is the case. Some people don’t want poisons around their home because they fear their children or pets may end up consuming it. Other people may not want to get rat poison because they don’t feel it’s an environmentally sound practice, and others may not like the idea of a rat eating poison and then dying in the walls of their home. This leaves the homeowner or apartment dweller with just one solution: Finding a rat trap that will get the job done for them.

Of course, even among rat traps, consumers have a ton of choices. There are Capture & Release Traps, Bucket Dump Traps, Electric Traps, and the conventional Strike Bar Rat Traps. And each of these has its own pros and cons. Let’s examine each of these traps and see if they’re a good fit for your home.

Catch & Release Traps

These rat traps are increasingly becoming a viable option for a lot of people. And there’s a good reason why that’s the case. It allows the mouse to be quickly and efficiently captured, without the homeowner having the burden of worrying about the rodents death. The rats are captured alive, so the homeowner can then dump them out in the wilderness.

However, what makes these traps humane can also make them inconvenient to use. Once you catch the rat, you then have to find a place to dump the rat and then go dump it. And to complicate the matter even further, you better make sure that you don’t release that rat near a residential area because if you do, then you’re liable to have a whole lot of people mad at you.

Bucket Dump Traps

Bucket dump rat traps are somewhat of a newer invention—marketed as a better mouse, I mean rat trap. And they’re designed is rather simple. You take your own 5-gallon bucket and then attach the bucket dump trap to the top of it, place water in it and bait it. When the rat goes out there, it’s dropped into the bucket via some sort of mechanism. The rat then ends up drowning in the water that’s in the bucket.

Although these traps are extremely effective, and rats don’t have the opportunity to escape like with some other traps, some people don’t like to use them because they feel that they’re inhumane. However, they’re also easy to dump out after its done its job, which makes it an attractive option to other people. Whether you want to use one of these devices is up to you and what you feel is right.

Electric Traps

Electric rat traps are another option available to consumers. These traps lure the rat into their plastic housing, and then the rat is quickly dispatched with an electrical volt that comes from a battery. These traps kill the rat almost instantly and are easy to use and clean. The only real downside of using them is that you have to make sure that the batteries in them are good in order for it to properly work.

Strike Bar Traps

I think that most of us are familiar with strike-bar rat traps. These are the types of traps that you bait and then pull back a large strike bar—either metal or plastic. When the rat attempts to retrieve the bait, the strike bar then snaps shut—either breaking the rat’s mouse or their spine. This results in a speedy and efficient death for the rat.

Although these traps are efficient and work well, a lot of people don’t like to use them. That’s because some of them can be difficult, or even scary, to set, especially the old fashioned metal ones. The newer plastic ones are easier to set, however. And are capable of providing the same amount of efficiency that the user expects out of the metal ones. However, when using them, you’re still faced with the prospect of emptying out the dead rat when you’re done.

The Best Rat Trap Bait

Although people have been using cheese in their rat traps for decades, it’s not the best choice. That’s because it doesn’t have a very strong smell to it and it’s easy for the rat to steal without setting off the trap. So I propose that instead of using cheese in your rat trap you use peanut butter.

Peanut butter not only has a strong odor that will attract rats, but it’s also very sticky. It’s so sticky, in fact, that once it’s placed on the bait area of the trap it’s hard to remove. And that’s why it’s so great. As the rat struggles to eat the peanut butter, they’ll end up activating the trap. Marshmallow is another food item that’s good to use in traps, but I really like using peanut butter.
