A Guide To Buying Socks
There was a time when neither men nor women paid much attention to the socks that they wore on a daily basis. Men’s clothing drawers were often filled with either black dress socks or white tube socks. Women either wore stockings or low-cut socks. A reflection of how little people paid attention to this particular type of clothing.
The lives of ordinary men and women then began to change. People began to seriously consider all of the different types of materials and different sock styles. In fact, there are so many different types of socks available it can sometimes be hard for people to figure out which kind would suit them best.
To help people out with this particular dilemma, we’ve decided to write this guide on what to look for when purchasing a pair of socks. While the following guidelines don’t cover absolutely everything about this wonderful article of clothing, it does cover some of the basics.
One of the first things a person should consider before buying a pair of socks is the material used to make them. While socks are manufactured with a number of different fabrics, the main ones can be broken down into five different categories: cotton, wool, cashmere, silk, and various synthetics. And each of these different fabrics has their own benefits and liabilities.
Cotton—This fabric is one of the more popular materials available, and that’s been the case for many years. That’s because cotton is lightweight and cooler than many other types of fabric. However, it also holds onto to moisture, and this can keep the wearer’s foot wet as well and eventually lead to ulcers. And because it holds onto moisture so well, it can also keep the feet cold during the winter months.
Wool—Wool is another popular material. That’s because it will keep the wearer’s feet warm in even the coldest of winter temperature. And unlike cotton, it doesn’t absorb a whole lot of moisture. The problem with these socks, however, is that they can be thick or itchy. This problem is lessened by manufacturer’s blending rayon with the wool, but it still doesn’t solve the entire problem. Another problem with wool is that it can tend to cost more than other materials.
Silk—Silk is a material which is lightweight and keeps the feet cool during the summer. They also breathe quite well and are very comfortable. Unfortunately, they have more than their share of drawbacks. They tend to pull a little bit on the heel, wear out quickly and are quite expensive. And silk loses its shape over time. This can lead to a poor fit. The fact that it’s only comfortable for a short period of time, and wears out quickly, has made silk a luxury material and has delegated silk socks as something to only wear during formal occasions.
Cashmere—This is also considered a luxurious material. It’s extremely soft and is considered to be warmer than wool. Unfortunately, cashmere is also usually more expensive than merino wool and wears out quicker, too. And a big problem with this material is that it can’t be machine washed and has to be hand washed to be maintained.
Synthetics—Synthetics are generally seen as being more durable than either wool, cashmere or cotton. However, it tends to not breathe very well and to not be as comfortable as natural fibers. That’s why synthetics are often blended with natural fibers such as wool or cotton. When added to these materials, synthetic materials can reduce shrinkage and can increase the durability of the fabric.
Types of Socks
Once the sock material has been decided on, it’s now time to figure out what type of sock to purchase. Generally speaking, people have seven different types of sock styles available to them. This includes crew, knee high, liner, low-cut, over the calf, quarter socks, and tab-socks. Below is a brief explanation of each type.
Crew Socks—These are designed to be used for casual day-to-day wear or for athletics. It is usually about 6 to 10-inches high and covers the ankle up to the calf.
Knee High Socks—These socks come up to just underneath the knee and can be worn with anything from flats to ankle booties.
Liner socks—These have an extremely low profile and are designed to be not be seen outside of the shoe. They are designed to be worn with everything from loafers to oxfords.
Low-Cut Socks—These are designed to either not be seen or to barely peek above the shoe. These can be worn with boat shoes, loafers or tennis shoes.
Over The Calf Socks—As the name implies, these cover the calves under the knees. They can be worn with most casual and dress shoes.
Quarter Socks—These socks have a length up to 5-inches and cover a person’s ankle. They were originally designed to be worn with tennis shoes but can be worn with any casual shoe including loafers and boat shoes.
Tab Socks—This product is designed to fit just underneath the ankle and has a small tab that covers the Achilles portion of the ankle. This makes this product suitable for athletic shoes.
A Quick Note On Style
In the past, black socks were considered to be the go-to choice for formal occasions. However, that’s no longer the case. Nowadays, people have a variety of different colors to choose from including various light gray colors. If a person is unsure what color they should wear with a particular pair of trousers for formal occasions, then they can always match it with the color of the trousers.
Another thing worth mentioning is pattern socks. When wearing these type of socks, people should never try to match their sock pattern with the same pattern found on another piece of clothing. It’s distracting and doesn’t suit most people well.
As long as a person does their homework, finding the right sock doesn’t have to be a chore. Nowadays, socks are made out of a variety of different materials and come in a wide assortment of styles. It doesn’t matter if a person needs a pair of business casual socks or if they need ones for athletic wear. There are socks perfect for just about anyone.
